Unemployment insurance provides temporary financial assistance for persons who have lost their jobs, through no fault of their own, until they find other employment. South Dakota's unemployment insurance program is financed by employers through payroll taxes; workers do not contribute to this plan.
Unemployment Insurance (UI) services are provided through the following sections:
The UI Benefits section provides a temporary source of income to qualified individuals while they look for work. To qualify for benefits, they must have worked for an employer who was required to pay the UI tax.
The UI Tax unit is responsible for identifying and registering subject employers, ensuring wage reports are filed so benefit eligibility can be established, collecting taxes due, and auditing employer records for compliance.
The New Hire Reporting Center collects reports on newly hired employees as required by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996 and South Dakota Codified Law 25-7A-3.3. The reports are mainly used to match against child support records to locate parents and establish or enforce child support orders.
The UI Overpayment and Fraud Unit's mission is to promote program integrity through prevention, detection, investigation, recovery and prosecution of overpayments and fraud.
The Handbook for Employers (in Adobe .pdf format*) is a guide to employer rights and responsibilities under the South Dakota Unemployment Insurance Law.
The Facts About Unemployment Insurance booklet (in Adobe .pdf format*) (sometimes referred to as the PAM-247 booklet), contains thorough information about unemployment insurance benefits for individuals.
