National labor market statistics available for April

Nationally, the unemployment rate for April was little changed at 8.1 percent, as was the number of unemployed persons (12.5 million).

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 115,000 in April. This increase followed a gain of 154,000 in March and gains averaging 252,000 per month for December to February. In April, employment rose in professional and business services, retail trade, and health care. Transportation and warehousing lost jobs over the month.

Seasonally adjusted March labor force data for metro areas now available

March 2012 seasonally adjusted labor force data for South Dakota's Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) of Rapid City and Sioux Falls is now available from the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). See the BLS news release or download the March data from the BLS website now. Historical data back to 2000 is available upon request to the BLS. The Labor Market Information Center is currently working on the ability to offer this seasonally adjusted labor force data for the South Dakota MSAs on our historical online database of labor force data; until that can be accomplished, we will provide a link to the data on the BLS website on this "what's new" page after each monthly release of the new data.
